Isaac Hayes

August 11, 2008 by billie789

Who could forget the introduction to the disco plague in the 1970’s that began with Shaft?

Wocca-wocca wah-wah guitar, symphony orchestra strings…It all seems so silly and useless nowadays.

The funny thing is that Isaac Hayes seemed much more cool than the era he helped start. Out of all the disco kings and queens, he was the Black-a licious dude in gold chains, Elvis sunglasses and that baritone boomer of a voice.

Hell, you read a cake recipe with those pipes and make the girls swoon.

I was cool with Isacc Hayes until he quit South Park as the voice of “Chef” because they did the now-infamous episode dumping on Scientology (Stan standing outside the closet door in his bedroom ordering a manic Tom Cruise to “come out of the closet”). He made a statement when he quit that they were disrepecting his religion. It was apparently out of the blue and the boys behond South Park said that up until that moment, they had no visible clue that he was into Scientology.

I keep telling people that religion has no place in entertainment. If you don’t believe me, listen to Christian rock sometime  ; )

I must plead ingorance to Issac Hayes’ music, with the exception of the “Shaft” single. That being said however, I did own a copy of Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” on vinyl, and really enjoyed it.

According to the two albums were released within a year of each other, and referred to their respective movies as “Blaxploitation” films. I’m not sure I agree with sentiment that these movies exploited blacks (as the genre name would imply) but not being a black man it’s difficult for me to say either way.

Released on the heals of the 60’s (1971 and 1972) I rather thought they were two of the first films to make it “Cool” to be a black dude. But then again, I’m just a middle-class saltine…so what do I know?
