Ah, the Sweet Irony of Savage Love!

This from John Amato at Crooks and Liars today

I actually think the UK was wrong to ban Michael Savage from their shores no matter how whacked out he is.

Britain on Tuesday published its first list of people barred from entering the country for allegedly fostering extremism or hatred, including Muslim extremists, a right-wing American radio host, an Israeli settler and jailed Russian gang members.

The U.K.’s law and order chief, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, said she decided to publish the names of 16 of 22 people who have been banned by the government since October so others could better understand what sort of behavior Britain was not prepared to tolerate.

Popular American talk-radio host, Michael Savage, who broadcasts from San Francisco and has called the Muslim holy book, the Quran, a “book of hate,” is on the list. Savage also has enraged parents of children with autism by saying in most cases it’s “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.”

It’s their country, so you’d think a conservative like Savage would leave the choice up to them, because they are taking personal responsibility for their own welfare, right? Isn’t that what he preaches? Anyway. I don’t agree with them, but when he asks Hillary Clinton for help, well, that’s insane.

Michael Savage, who has since expressed his outrage at the decision. “It is demented,” Savage said. “I want my name off of that list and I want a letter of apology from this [British Home Secretary] Jacqui Smith.” Now it appears that Savage is seeking help from an old nemesis: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The San Fransisco Chronicle’s Rich Lieberman reports that “[l]awyers for Savage are formally asking [that] she call on the British Government to withdraw its ban.” It’s interesting that Savage is now turning to Clinton for help, considering what he has had to say about her in the past. Some examples:

– “Hillary Clinton, the most Godless woman in the Senate.”

– Regarding one of Clinton’s speeches: “That’s rubbish. That’s Hitler dialogue. Goebbels would be proud of you, Hillary Clinton. I know Mao Zedong would have been proud of you.”

– “[Clinton has] destroyed the war effort against terror. And if, God forbid, a suitcase bomb goes off you’ll know who to blame.”

– On Clinton’s run for the presidency: “[She would] stir up a race war, a civil war in the country to get that hag, that harridan elected.”

Savage also once suggested that Clinton had something to do with the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. so she could run for U.S. Senate in New York.

The venom directed at Hillary from talkers like Savage is despicable, but I do find it ironic now that he’s actually asking her to intervene on his behalf. How miserable does it make him feel that he has to seek out Hillary for help. Hahahahahahaha.

You’re sure fixated on cousin Mike, aren’t you? :-)

  2. bill says:

Actually, Cousin Mike is fixated on Cousin Mike. And he’s paid millions to do it.

I just thought it was kinda funny…and bizarre…and somehow satisfying to know that a trapped weasel will do anything, even turn on his own much-publicized opinions, to seek relief.

To me, this is like Dick Cheney asking his daughter’s girlfriend to come over for dinner more often.

  3. Stu says:

Interesting dynamic at work. The millions he gets paid is a result of the advertising revenue he generates being the #3 talk radio host in America, which in turn is a result of his “popularity” and market share.

I don’t take him so seriously. Radio first and formost is a for-profit entertainment business. Like they say in journalism class, “Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.” I think a lot of his schtick is tongue-in-cheek.

  4. bill says:

Funny you mention that. It’s come to light recently that Limbaugh’s handlers actually give his show away in certain markets where there’s not enough demand to charge stations a fee to air it.

That way, his syndicators can claim listeners in a market that isn’t paying for the show so that the numbers look larger for advertisers. The station gets free programming.

    Pretty cool, huh?

And just so you know that I’m not just picking on Weiner, I just inadvertantly listened to Hannity’s show on the way back from a funeral today and it was amazingly stupid.

Get this:”Hi, Sean! Thanks for taking my call. You are a great American, sir!”

“Well, thank you! You are a great American, too!”

What kind of pathetic faux-patriotism is that? How far has the fucking bar on being a Great American been lowered?

For all Hannity knows, the guy’s a rascist child molester like the rest of his listeners.

  5. esarsea says:

I’ve heard that Hannity bit myself. It seems to be a standard greeting between listeners of the program who call in, and the host. It’s similar to a Seattle rock station I listen to on occasion, where the standard exchange between callers and the host is, “Hola, Bitchola!” I have not listened to Hannity often enough to form any opinion of him and his program’s content though.

As for Limbaugh’s handlers, that just sounds like smart business practice to me!

Rush ought to be paying US instead of taking all that corporate welfare

    January 30, 2009

    Dear Mr. Limbaugh,

The Associated Press reports your new contract with Premiere Radio Networks will enrich you with at least $38 million a year over the next eight years. You are making this money on the public property of the American people for which you pay no rent.

You, Rush Limbaugh, are on welfare.

As you know, the public airwaves belong to the American people. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is supposed to be our trustee in managing this property. The people are the landlords and the radio and TV stations and affiliated companies are the tenants.

The problem is that since the Radio Act of 1927 these corporate tenants have been massively more powerful in Washington, DC than the tens of millions of listeners and viewers. The result has been no payment of rent by the stations for the value of their license to broadcast. You and your company are using the public’s valuable property for free. This freeloading on the backs of the American people is called corporate welfare.

It is way past due for the super-rich capitalist–Rush Limbaugh from Cape Girardeau, Missouri–to get himself off big time welfare. It is way past due for Rush Limbaugh as the Kingboy of corporatist radio to set a capitalist example for his peers and pay rent to the American people for the very lucrative use of their property.

You need not wait for the broadcast industry-indentured FCC and Congress to do the right thing. You can lead by paying a voluntary rent–determined by a reputable appraisal organization–for the time you use on the hundreds of stations that carry your words each weekday.

Payment of rent for the use of public airwaves owned by the American people is the conservative position. Real conservatives oppose corporate welfare. Real corporatists feed voraciously from hundreds of billions of dollars in corporate welfare gushing out of Washington, DC yearly.

Whose side are you on? Freeloading? Or paying rent for the public property you have been using free for many years?

I look forward to your response.

    Sincerely yours,

    Ralph Nader

Every once in a while, Ralph pulls one out! That’s a great post, thanks

Actually Ralph puts them out on a very regular basis, I wish more people read him actually.

I’ve been avoiding this thread but just stumbled upon this article from the BBC and felt it relevant to the discussion.

  10. Randy Spiker says:

“Rush ought to be paying US instead of taking all that corporate welfare”

OK….. you got me, I’ve taken the bait.

Rush’s salary being equated to “Corporate” welfare is about as ridiculous a statement that I have seen in some time. He, whether you agree with him or not….. EARNS IT! HE HAS A CONTRACT, T’s crossed , I’s dotted!! If he suddenly couldn’t hear causing him incapable to perform his contracted duties and do his show, do you think he would still be getting paid? No, Rush would have to live on the millions acquired from all those right wing nut-jobs that supported his salary over the years by BUYING ITEMS PROMOTED ON HIS SHOW!!!!!…… just in the same way that Olberman, O’Reily and Matthews keep their jobs. They ALL have something to sell and make money doing just that.

Amazing…… can you just imagine that, CAPITALISM at work! You do understand how capitalism works, RIGHT?!!!!!

And don’t you find it just a little strange that he goes after Rush, a successful talk show host with countless millions of listeners daily, yet leaves Olberman and his 7 million a year contract alone. Olberman’s “in the tank” ratings don’t warrant his salary and if there was ever an example to be made for “corporate welfare”, there you have it!!! Maybe you should alert Ralph to this new cause he seems to be interested in by coughing up Olberman! WAFJ!!!!!

Nader is a total buffoon that can’t even put two causes together and get elected Dog catcher, much less POTUS. Another stinking has-been trial lawyer reject. What a f#cking moron!!!!! Even the MSM has no use for “Ralph” and treat him deservedly as the oddity he is.

I don’t expect to see a new article bemoaning the Olberman thing anytime soon as we ALL know where whiny Ralph is coming from and we ALL know where he is going……… NO-WHERE!!!!!

Keep those cards and Nader references coming Jane!

  11. Randy Spiker says:

And furthermore, I have always had a problem with the Government “selling” the airwaves. Bandwidth regulations for obvious reasons are fine but why and who made it their “right” to sell airspace? Air vs. Airwaves…… not much difference visually. Just another money making scheme brought to you by none other than…… you guessed it, money hungry politicians! What’s next, are we gonna start taxing the air we breath (please say no!) If you take Naders logic, it could be justified as it IS the “peoples” air! I’d better shut up as some enviro-nutjob could read this and take it two steps further.

This is what happens when too many Lawyers are in command. Especially idiots like Ralph.

    Ralph wrote;
“The problem is that since the Radio Act of 1927 these corporate tenants have been massively more powerful in Washington, DC than the tens of millions of listeners and viewers. The result has been no payment of rent by the stations for the value of their license to broadcast. You and your company are using the public’s valuable property for free. This freeloading on the backs of the American people is called corporate welfare.”

    First off, I don’t buy his assesment of “no payment” as all operating commercial broadcasters DO pay a pretty hefty liscenesing fee and that is about as pathetic a bunch of legal-sleeze mumbo jumbo as I have ever seen. It’s no wonder that no-one pays any attention to this idiot. Not to mention that even if he remotely has a leg to stand on in this fight, wouldn’t his beef be with the syndicators of Rush’s show and not Limbaugh personally? This just goes to show what a grandstanding ass Nader truly is as proven by the next statement;

“It is way past due for the super-rich capitalist–Rush Limbaugh from Cape Girardeau, Missouri–to get himself off big time welfare. It is way past due for Rush Limbaugh as the Kingboy of corporatist radio to set a capitalist example for his peers and pay rent to the American people for the very lucrative use of their property”.

That whole statement wreaks of someone with a major Napolean complex (little man syndrome).

I don’t know….. maybe I’m still mad at Ralph for what he did to the CJ5 and Corvair. Asshole! And maybe I just don’t like him because of who and what he is…….. a Trial Lawyer. The lowest form of human life known, even lower than a Used car Salesman or Right Wing Extremist Talk Show Host. Same kind of bottom feeder as John Edwards….. but that’s a “hoe” story for another thread.

    One thing I do find interesting now that I’ve stared at these ridiculous statements for over an hour is this;

“You and your company are using the public’s valuable property for free.”

As I understand it, his presumption that “using the public’s valuable property for free” would seem to indicate that in his opinion, the “airwaves” are the responsibility and under control of the Government.

Using the logic of a trial lawyer such as Ralph, couldn’t he sue the Government for people suffering from symptoms resulting from living too close to high voltage lines…… the EMR effect? If it’s the “public’s valuable property”, that being the airwaves which includes ALL forms of radio transmissions which EMRs fall under, then wouldn’t the Government be responsible due to inadequate regulation of harmful EMRs? There inlies the fallacy of Naders perposturous claims. If you’re gonna tax the airwaves for commerce then there should be an equal responsibility to take care of the people injured by those same airwaves by permitting the commerce responsible for their injuries.

I’m gonna go shoot myself as I have started to think like one of “them”!
