6 Flags Theme Park to host Muslim Family Day on 9/12, sparking controversy

July 20, 2010 by esarsea

A Six Flags Theme Park near Chicago, Illinois will be hosting a, “Muslim Family Day” on September 12th of this year.

Supporters point to the fact the date coincides with the end of Ramadan 2010, and that the annual event pre-dates the 9/11 attacks.

Opponents claim the date of the event is insensitive at best, and that the group coordinating the event (the Islamic Circle of North America or “ICNA” has alleged ties to terrorist groups and may have helped fund the 9/11 attacks.

According to the ICNA website their goals include, “…To oppose immorality and oppression in all forms, and support efforts for civil liberties and socio-economic justice in the society. To strengthen the bond of humanity by serving all those in need anywhere in the world, with special focus on our neighborhood across North America. To cooperate with other organizations for the implementation of this program and unity in the ummah.”

However, David Horowitz’s Discover The Networks website paints a decidedly darker picture of the ICNA.

Well, it’s David Horowitz. What did you expect?

Wiki: “Horowitz was a supporter of Huey P. Newton, and raised money for the Black Panther Party. He has written that he recommended that the Panther Party hire a bookkeeper, Betty Van Patter, who was then working for Horowitz at Ramparts. In December 1974, she was murdered.[15] While her murder is unsolved, Horowitz alleges that the Panthers were responsible for her death, motivated, he states, by the desire to stop Van Patter from revealing the party’s financial corruption. Later, he cited that experience as the catalyst for reassessing his views that took him from the political left to the political right.

So rather than discuss the topic, you choose to discuss David Horowitz? I don’t get it.

From just a quick scan of Horowitz’s wiki, I don’t know that this disqualifies his observations of the ICNA?

Born in 1933 to parents who were both long-standing members of the communist party, he grew up to support the Black Panthers. Horowitz would have been 24 years old when Dr. King gave his “I have a dream” speech, and the civil rights movement (generally thought of to have been 1955-1968) was the backdrop for his life from age 22 to 35. Probably not too surprising that a kid raised in a communist household in that era to suport a group that was fighting the status quo in America at the time.

Equally understandable to become disenfranchised with the group and movement he was supporting, if in fact his allegations about his former emplyee’s murder are accurate. Might even lead one to rethink one’s philosophies and and move more to the right…

I don’t have much to say other than it’s a business decision made by a private enterprise and they have the right to make business decisions as they see fit, good or bad, succeed or fail. I do however wonder how groups like the ACLU or a person like Michael Newdow would react to a Christian day at the park?

Since you brought up the Muslim thing, I recently stumbled upon this video that contains an interesting perspective on Muslim history. I don’t necessarily subscribe to the theory laid forth but it is something to think about non-the-less.

Where do you find this stuff?!? Some guy on the street talking about another guy who had stupid photoshopped pics of the Statue of Liberty, etc. And, honestly, every organized religion has its magic book that contains embarassingly backward passages and lessons.

Last night, I was watching a documentary about “stoning” in Muslim countries and they went back and forth between the Quran and the Bible, as both contain idiotic passages about stoning people to death over everything from marital infidelity to theft to having sex with animals. I guess having sex with animals was a lot more popular back then than I previously thought possible. The Bible counsels that if caught in an act of riding the horse or butt-butting a goat, you were to be stoned to death and the animal, a vicitm of your indiscretion, was to be put to death, as well. Something about scattering the remains, etc. Pretty goddam medieval.

Why, oh why, do people insist on living under rules of life that were created 1,500 to 2,000 years ago? Evolve, damn you!

There was shouting and celbrations in the streets of a lot of Muslim countries when 9/11 went down. It’s because we had become so very unpopular overseas.

I didn’t say I agreed with it but I did find the info on Muslim conquests throughout history to be interesting if at all true (haven’t had time to fact check)

Here’s another video that speaks to the proposed 13 story Mosque at “ground zero” from a british stand up comedian named Pat Condell. He’s not doing stand-up here. Bill, you might actually relate to this guy as he speaks to the Saudis telling Fox news what to broadcast. ;-)

      Thank you for this.

Are they really planning to open it on Sept 11th? Are you kidding me? Please see if you can find some documentation of this and post it here.

In fact, this video warrants it’s own thread. If you can find that piece of information please post it in the comments there. I am going to repost this.
