It’s that time again, when I pose a question about a quote from a famous person and you Google the shit out of it trying to figure out which choice said it.

Someone said that the Taliban, America’s sworn enemy, were very civilized and just like Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.

Who said it?

A-Bill Ayers

B-Osama Bin Laden

C-Ronald Reagan

D-Ted Bundy

Choose away! Good luck and Thanks for playing-

Isn’t “googling” the quote kind of like cheating?

I couldn’t find a quote even close, but I suspect it was Reagan when he was supporting the Afghan freedom fighters in their struggle against the Soviet occupation back in the 80’s. I don’t know that Reagan specifically said that of the Taliban, but he probably did of the Mujahideen…some of which were Taliban, and some of which were not.

    Close?

  3. Bill says:

Reagan specifically said that about the Taliban. His meeting was with reps of all three factions.

“Ronald Reagan meeting with Taliban\al-Qaeda\Mujahideen:”These gentlemen [Taliban] are the moral equivalents of America’s Founding Fathers” ~President Ronald Reagan 1985

    You win! We lose!

I wonder how things would have worked out if we had not supported them against the Soviets at that time.

The Taliban hates us now anyway, so that would not have changed. But what if the (then) USSR had conquered Afghanistan, instead of getting mired down on the conflict from ’78 to ’92 and spending billions upon billions? The cost of the war certainly contributed to the collapse of the USSR and effectively ending the cold war.

Who knows. It’s interesting to think about how the world might be different today if the Soviets won that war and expanded rather than collapsed. Maybe the Taliban would be running jetliners into the Kremlin intead of the twin towers. Maybe the Soviets would have moved into Pakistan and Iran after Afghanistan. There’s many potential scenarios. I find it fascinating to speculate on.

History will probably come down on the side of not helping them against the Soviets.

People must realize that so much of what our country does just behind the scenes in other countries is what makes them so goddam mad at us. About the time the CIA was supplying Stinger missles to the Taliban\al-Qaeda\Mujahideen to specifically shoot down Soviet helicoptors, Reagan was giving Saddam Hussein binary chemical weapons to fight the Iranians. He used them on his own Kurdish citizens, of course, because he was out of his frickin’ mind.

Then, Bush II’s adminstration used the image of Saddam using chemical weapons against his own people as one of the revolving reasons for invading.

We’re not the only ones, as China and France will sell lethal weapons to whoever has the money, but we’re SUPPOSED to be better than that and we aren’t.

But time after time we have put weapons and money in the hands of really bad people to win their temporary loyalty, most often for strategic purposes and then cannot understand why the citizens who are victimized by our Tin Horn Puppet Dictators are upset.

We are so conflicted as a country! Our foreign policy has multiple personalities.

Have you guys seen the movie called the Lord of War starring Nicholas Cage? On a slightly different level, it very much mirrors what you’re talking about Bill.

      Here’s some info and trailers if you haven’t yet seen it;
      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399295/

I have seen it. And I believe it’s based on a true character who was an international arms dealer. Another one with John Cusack, I think, but the name escapes me. China sells hundreds of thousands of their version of the AK-47 to African countries that are in shooting wars with each other. Diamonds and gold are probably involved.
