Turn It Up Tuesday!

November 2, 2010 by esarsea

Some foods are so rich, so satisfying that one single serving is best. One can only handle a small portion of the heavy, complex flavors before the pallet becomes overwhelmed. Such is the case with this week’s Turn It Up Tuesday.

Featured below is a live performance by Jethro Tull featuring Ian Anderson at his maniacal best. The song is My God, which was the 1st track on side 2 of their top-selling 1971 LP, Aqualung.

It’s a stellar performance with great audio and video. Since there is only one clip this week, take the time to watch it all the way through – and turn it way up too!

Saw the original line-up in Salt Lake City back in the earlier 70’s. The bass player was wearing kind of a Zippy the Pinhead one-piece clown suit and huge sunglasses and no matter what the timing/beat of the song, he made the same movement on his own time. He would be playing away and take three short steps out from his amp, kinda do a squat on one leg, stand back up and walk three paces backward, then repeat through the whole tune. At first it was visually distracting, then it got kind of humorous, then just, plain weird. And great fun! We didn’t know it, but they were staying at a Holiday Inn near the freeway and we all occasionally went there for after-bar hours breakfast. Sat down in a booth and lo and behold, guess who came in and sat in the booth next to us? The whole band! “Hey! We just saw your show!” They were so nice and so cordial to us it was a mind-blower. Asked polite questions about Utah in that proper British accent and what kind of jobs we had, etc. I never forgot that. It was the Aqualung tour. Anderson was very cool and funny.

I saw a recent show on Palladia a couple of weeks ago and they kick butt.

I keep hearing about this Palladia channel. I’m going to have to see if I can get that through Comcast. Unless I have missed it somehow, I don’t think it’s part of my current package. Is it a premium service that one must subscribe to, like Showtime, etc?

      • Bill says:

I think it’s an add-on channel. I get it through Direct TV. Recently, I’ve seen current shows with Jethro Tull, Queen feat. Paul Rodgers, Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott’s, Yes, Asia, Iron Maiden w/o Rob Halford, good stuff. In HD, too.

Yep, Palladia is VERY cool! Add to that list the Bonamassa Royal Albert Hall gig and the Dream Theater Budokan gig as well. They play allot of obscure stuff and Bill’s favorite guitarist, Steve Vai as well. ;-)

I just recently in the last week switched from Dish network to Direct TV. They are running some fabulous specials right now and if you sign-up through Best Buy, they also chip in a $50.00 gift card as well. That NFL Sunday Ticket is a pretty cool deal as well if you’re into football.

    Oooh, good choice!

And Bill, that’s kind of cool. Love when stuff like that happens.

He,he…maniacal best is right! He rivals Joe Cocker. And hey, man, an old 70s “Turn it Up” was just what I needed, as I wallow in depression on post-election Wednesday. I don’t think I’ll be participating in Turn it Up Tuesday very often though. We’re off dial-up, but our connection is still too slow for this stuff. This one was worth the time though. Thanks Stu.

damn Randy one of us could have gotten 100 bucks or something for you signing up for directtv

  5. Bill says:

I believe I did see his magical wonderment Vai on Palladia, now that you mention it. Haven’t seen the JB show. Only so many hours in the day.

Here’s clip if you missed it. Brilliant!

      • Bill says:

Hahahahahahahahahaha! God, that’s just funny! I’ve seen the ones with Slash and Clapton but there’s something about this one that just digs at his pomposity. The thing at 2:20, where he’s pulling faces and there’s no sound?!?! Wha-Hahahahaha!
