Beck called together Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood and Keith Moon to discuss creating a ‘supergroup’ post-Yardbirds. He said he wanted to create a big rock sound.
Moon, limo’d in secret to hide from The Who, exclaimed that this band would go over with Who fans like a ‘lead zepplin,’ a British reference to a lead balloon. Then, someone suggested that they shorten it to ‘Led’ to avoid people trying to pronounce it like “lead guitar.”
Of course, they all went their separate ways that night never to reform and Page jumped on it.
